Overview
The Future Directions in Literacy Conference 2007 aims to stimulate professional conversations about future developments in literacy pedagogy and practice for an international audience. It will provide a forum for teachers, students, academics and policy makers to share concerns as well as potential solutions to the current problems facing literacy educators. The scope of papers, workshops and presentations will cover issues pertinent to the age range K–8: infants to the middle years.
The conference’s major cross-cutting themes are:
- Learning and teaching pedagogies
- Diverse needs (including Indigenous literacies)
- Creative literacies
- Assessment: consistency and relevance
- New literacies.
Program
Day 1 (Monday 3 Sept) : Teachers' Workshop Day
Practitioners will present examples of best teaching practice. Presentations have been invited from Lighthouse Schools, award winners from the National Literacy and Numeracy Week as well as other teachers recognised for their exemplary work.
Days 2, 3 & 4 (Tuesday 4 - Thursday 6 Sept)
Leaders in the field of literacy pedagogy and practice will present their latest findings and insights as formal papers. Each paper will be followed by a conversation between participants and presenter about issues raised in the paper.

Where & When
The conference venue is the Harold Park Raceway Function Centre on the corner of Ross Street and Wigram Road, Glebe – only minutes from the University Campus across Parramatta Road. Download a map of the area here, or visit www.whereis.com for directions.
Registration will be held in the foyer each morning at the following times, with tea and coffee available on arrival.
– Monday morning between 8:00–8:50am, and
– Tuesday to Thursday mornings between 8:30–9:20am
Room details for feature presentations, concurrent sessions and workshops and will be available at registration.
Parking & Public Transport
Parking is available at the venue on Centre Field. There is also limited parking in a small carpark next to the function centre. Please note that on the Tuesday of the conference that Harold Park Raceway is in operation in the afternoon. Parking is free.
Harold Park is also well serviced by public transport with buses running regularly from the City via Central. Routes 431, 432, 433 & 434 depart from George Street in the City and travel along Broadway and down Glebe Point Road. These services pass Harold Park and it is only a short walk to the function centre.
Accommodation
Delegates are responsible for their own accommodation arrangements. As the APEC Conference is being held in Sydney during the same week we urge you to book accommodation as early as possible.
To assist delegates we have organised a special accommodation package with Rydges Camperdown. Delegates will be offered a reduced rate of $220 per night inclusive of full buffet breakfast if they mention, when booking, that they are attending this conference run by the Division of Professional Learning at the University of Sydney. This hotel is a 20 minute walk to Harold Park, and is centrally located for easy access to the University, the City, restaurants, entertainment and transport.
